Awesome book alert - The 17 by Mike Kilroy

This book is next on my TBR list. It has aliens, arenas and love. Check it out and let me know what you think!

YOLO? Not here where You Only Live Forever.
In the center of the universe, an ancient species known as the Ankhs are in their death throes. What they seek is a "Spark."
Zack Earnest, a rather average seventeen-year-old boy from a small town in Maine, and sixteen others may be able to provide it. The odd and lonely teen is whisked away from his home, from his best—and only—friend, Caroline, and from his mom's scrumptious eggs to a place where the rules of life and death don't apply.
Teenagers from his world—and from many others as well—are tested in elaborate arenas. They die and are resurrected in a brutal and tortuous vetting process by the Ankhs.
Zack passes the test and a whole universe is revealed to him. He becomes smitten with Mizuki, the girl (in the solar system) next door, and they soon discover the Ankh's intentions are not what they seem.
From the best-selling author of Nine Meals comes a story of hope and redemption, of patience and understanding, of acceptance and belonging and that, even in the center of the universe, love is a constant.

New book alert! Bestselling Aranya by Marc Secchia, Shapeshifter Dragons Book 1

After reading Meg Jensen's Hidden, I've been dying to get my hands on more YA dragon fiction. Today's featured book looks like a winner! Aranya is book 1 of the Shapeshifter Dragons series by Marc Secchia. It was released just a month ago and is already a best seller! Make sure you check out the excerpt at the end of this post.

Check out the blurb below:

Chained to a rock and tossed off a cliff by her boyfriend, Aranya is executed for high treason against the Sylakian Empire. Falling a league into the deadly Cloudlands is not a fate she ever envisaged. But what if she did not die? What if she could spread her wings and fly?

Long ago, Dragons ruled the Island-World above the Cloudlands. But their Human slaves cast off the chains of Dragonish tyranny. Humans spread across the Islands in their flying Dragonships, colonising, building and warring. Now, the all-conquering Sylakians have defeated the last bastion of freedom–the Island-Kingdom of Immadia.

Evil has a new enemy. Aranya, Princess of Immadia. Dragon Shapeshifter.

Quotable quote: "Still lay the Island-Wold beneath the whisper of a Dragon's wings"

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Marc is a South African-born author who lives and works in Ethiopia with his wife and 4 children, 2 dogs, a rabbit, and a variable number of marabou storks that roost on the acacia trees out back. On a good night there are also hyenas patrolling the back fence. When he's not writing about Africa Marc can be found travelling to remote locations. He thinks there's nothing better than standing on a mountaintop wondering what lies over the next horizon.

Excerpt

Nak scowled at the Dragon, who glowered in return. “I’m trying, Nak.”
“Trying with the wrong brain,” said Nak. “Try to appreciate, my delectable damsel, how much more brain there is behind that thick Dragon skull of yours than a Human will ever enjoy. Islands’ sakes, your head and muzzle are longer than I am tall. A Dragon’s brain is designed for flying.”
“I understand that, Nak.”
“But does it penetrate that impervious shield of armoured Dragon bone about your cranium?” Nak smacked her muzzle for emphasis. “The instant Human-Aranya tries to fly, you resemble a blue-speckled marsh stork stuck in a glue trap, flapping up and down in a panic. Dragons glide, Aranya. They soar. They do not flap straight up and down like a child playing Dragonships, they tilt the wing to minimise drag on the forward stroke and maximise power and lift on the backward stroke. A figure of eight is basic to good flying.”
He demonstrated with his arms–for the tenth time, Aranya thought, crossly. The real problem lay between her ears, precisely as he said, in her inability to disassociate her Human brain from the business of flying. Don’t think. Just fly. Easy as breathing.
She followed his instructions yet again, showing the maximum extent of her incredibly flexible wing joints. She made her wing tips touch together ahead of her nose, then way above her back, before spreading her wings to their maximum extent, her struts straining and her muscles quivering as she held the required position.
Nak marched along her wing, tapping the salient points with his cane. “First joint, the shoulder. The second–your elbow, if you prefer–brings the wing bone forward again, although you can reverse it and lock the joint for the gliding configurations. Eleven flight struts, your primary struts, lie between the shoulder and the elbow. They are a light and flexible form of Dragon bone. Seven struts lie between the elbow and the third joint, your wrist. These provide power when used properly. All of your struts can curve with these ancillary muscles to provide additional shape to the wing’s surface. From the wrist to the wingtip we have five thinner struts. These provide manoeuvrability and fine control in the air. Now, the tail–”
“Nak. You’re filling her brain with technicalities,” said Oyda. “The poor girl’s mired worse than your stork in a glue trap.”
“Ha!” snorted Nak, resting on a boulder. He waved his cane. “Your pupil, master.”
Aranya glanced between them. They were so familiar with Dragons. So experienced. Nothing about Dragon-Aranya seemed to surprise Nak and Oyda. It was hard to believe that the rest of the Island-World did not feel the same way.
Advancing toward her with a posy of wildflowers held in her right hand, which she had been collecting, Oyda said, “I’ve been thinking.”
“Thinking is precisely the problem around here,” Nak interrupted.
Oyda quelled him with a fierce scowl of her own. “Right, my fledgling. Memorise these flowers.”
“I–um, what’s this got to do with–”
“Now, or it’s none of my honey biscuits for you later, you churlish wretch.”
Aranya studied the wildflowers. Five meadow daisies, a sprinkling of tiny blue-tinkles and three each of peonies, red anemones and tall bursts of fireflowers, made up her posy.
“Now, you will make a pass above the dell,” Oyda instructed. “While you fly, you will tell your Human brain to paint these flowers in every detail. I will question you afterward. And–do shut your yawning trap, petal. You’re catching flies.”
Grumbling to herself about how direct Nak and Oyda could be at times, Aranya thumped four-pawed over to the edge of the cliff, to her favourite outcropping, and threw herself into the air. This bit at least she had grasped. As usual, the moment she was aloft, her Human and Dragon brains went to war in her head. She immediately wallowed in the air. Every wing beat was a struggle.
Fine. She would paint flowers.
Aranya shot through the morning air. The deep golden sunbeams of a partial eclipse, the twin suns almost completely hidden behind Iridith’s bulk, seemed thick enough to swim in. She wheeled a thousand feet out and spun back on her wingtip for the required pass over the dell, where the figures of two tiny old people watched her intently.
She shaped meadow daisies. She concentrated on the finely bearded leaves of the fireflowers.
And she flew like a Dragon.
She raced across the sword-grass of the dell, almost brushing the blade-tips with her wingtips, before corkscrewing up above the forest bordering the heights and doubling back for a graceful landing that barely disturbed the still morning air.
Nak and Oyda smiled mysteriously at Aranya.
“Well? How was that?”
Nak wiped his eye. “Got a gnat stuck …”
“You old charlatan.” Oyda clipped the back of his head fondly. “That was Dragon, Aranya. Pure Dragon.”

All I can say is I loved this book - once I started to read it, I couldnt put it down!!!!! Jennifer Leblanc

Alexandria Santorini learns as a child that she comes from a long line of Harvey witches. Now, as a teenager, Alexandria must say goodbye to Catnip Cottage and the Barnabys, her loving guardians for the last twelve years, and go home to Ferntree Falls to claim her inheritance. New books update!

Have you read the epilogue to Summer Unplugged yet? If not, here it is on Wattpad:

Now that the Summer Unplugged series is finished, (I know I know! You're all mad at me!) I am happy to be working on a new series that I know you'll love just as much as SU. It's the Devin and Tobey series, and here's the scoop:

The Best Kind of Thief - Part 1
Available on Amazon

Being rich isn’t fun when your dad is a womanizer whose newest girlfriend just stood you up in front of the entire high school. Seventeen-year-old Devin Asher has had enough. Armed with a full bank account, she takes a random road trip to have an adventure that will beat living in a house with a new step-mom each month. The only problem? She has no idea where she’s going.

When she stumbles upon the small town of Silver Valley on a pee break, Devin runs into one of her dad’s old girlfriends—the best one he ever had. Heather takes her in and gives her a place to sleep for the night and a warm breakfast from the local diner the next morning. Here Devin meets Tobey, a handsome mechanic who’s on a mission to steal something very dear to him. Devin isn’t sure if she’s up to the challenge of breaking and entering, but with the way Tobey smiles at her, she’s willing to try.

The Best Prom Date - Part 2
Coming May 27th!

After meeting Tobey and having a wild dog-stealing adventure, Devin is back at home in the city and stuck in school once more. Tobey is two hours away and working so much overtime he barely has time to call, much less make a road trip to visit. Her dad has gone totally insane, blowing obscene amounts of money on any woman who will date him.

Devin is still grounded and her friends have abandoned her for the night life and parties. The only thing Devin has to look forward to is her senior prom—that is of course, if she can get a date.

*BONUS* I'm doing a special limited time giveaway. If you leave a review of The Best Kind of Thief on Amazon, I will give you part two, The Best Prom Date totally FREE! To take advantage of this, please leave a review on Amazon, then send an email to writeamysparling at gmail.com letting me know about it, and I'll send you the second book ASAP.

Finally, part 2 of the Mary Jane Series now has a cover! Although its release date is tentative, I'm currently promising the date of September 30th, but hoping to get it out sooner! Add it to Goodreads

Summer Unplugged - Epilogue

THREE YEARS LATER

The Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas is normally a football field. But once a year they cover the floor with tons of dirt and for one night, the smell of exhaust and the thrill of dirt bike racing entertains the tens of thousands of fans that come out. The smell of fresh popcorn and cotton candy fill the air, making my mouth water. I don’t think I remembered to eat all day. From waking up late, realizing it was Supercross day, panicking and getting everything ready for the long trip to Houston, there wasn’t really any time to eat.
Normally Jace is my (super handsome) alarm clock each morning, but today his cousin came over at the crack of dawn and they worked on her bike, getting it ready for her big day. This will be her first ever try at racing professionally. If it wasn’t for Jace’s training, she wouldn’t be at this level. So we’re all really proud of her. And I’m proud of my hubby.
Two years after marrying the boy and it still gives me butterflies to think of how awesome it is that I get to call him “hubby” now.
“What’s wrong? You look flushed,” Hana asks as we leave the concession stand carrying nachos, drinks and popcorn through the crowds.
I suppress a laugh and shake my head. “Nothing.” She definitely doesn’t need to know that I’m blushing because I’m having silly girly thoughts about my own husband. I mean, who does that? It’s been almost four years since we started dating...I shouldn’t still be so crazy about him, but I am. Guess I’m just one of the lucky ones.
“Thanks for helping me carry this stuff,” she says. “I didn’t want to go alone because then I’d look like a total fatass with all this food.”
I glance down at the two trays of nachos, (one of which is mine), the tub of popcorn and the package of candied pecans. “You’re not a fatass!”
“Fine, if anything, I’m a fat stomach.” She motions toward her round belly and rolls her eyes. “I wish this thing would get out of me already. I miss wearing pants without elastic on the waistband.”
“You’re eating for two now. There’s nothing to be ashamed about,” I say as I glance up at the rows of seats. We’re in section one twenty-one I think, so we still have a ways to walk through these crowds of people. “Just please don’t dip the pecans in the cheese sauce like you did at Dallas Supercross.”
“You’ll never let me live that down,” she mutters under her breath.
I love Hana. She’s been the best friend I really needed after moving from the place I’ve lived my whole life to a tiny motocross town with hardly any residents my own age. And since she’s married to Ash and I’m married to Jace and we all work at the same motocross track, it only made sense that Jace and I built our house next to theirs.
We’ve only just moved in, hence why my real alarm clock isn’t set up next to our bed. I’m not really sure which box it’s in. But our house is gorgeous. I swear. I can’t even believe I’m only twenty-one and living in such a beautiful place. Jace and I worked with the same architect who built Hana’s house, so we got something similar. My favorite part is the back wall that stretches from the first floor to the second floor and is made almost entirely of windows that look out into the motocross track in our back yard.
That, and the hot tub on our second story balcony are my two favorite parts of the house. Jace and I have wasted so much time in that hot tub, staring at the stars, sharing stories and being in love. Even when I’m grumpy because he’s spent ten hours a day at the track, I know I can look forward to unwinding at the end of the day with him in our hot tub. The thing is magical, I swear.
“Here we are,” Hana says, stopping at section one twenty-one. “Can you believe that next year I’m gonna have a baby with me at Supercross?”
“Yep,” I say, carefully stepping down the steps to our front row seats. “Knowing that husband of yours, the baby will probably have dreadlocks by then.”
“Excuse me!” I notice a teenage girl rushing to the end of her aisle, waving frantically in my direction. “Excuse me,” she says, looking right at me. She’s wearing a t-shirt with Jace’s name and bike number on it. “Are you Bayleigh Adams?”
“Yep,” I say with a smile. She probably wants Jace’s autograph or something.
“I’m sorry to bother you, but I think you’re so awesome.”
I lift an eyebrow. “Um...what?”
She takes out her cell phone and hands it to a girl next to her. “I saw your interview in Motocross magazine about motocross wives and I just think you’re so awesome. I love how you work at the track and you help Jace and everything and I thought it was really classy how you handled that paparazzi thing at the nationals last year.”
Ugh, here comes the cheek blushing again. “Thanks,” I say. “It’s really nothing. Jace hates the paparazzi so I try to help him deal with it as much as I can.”
“Would you mind taking a photo with me?” she asks, biting the edge of her lip in anticipation. “You’re kind of my hero.”
“Of course,” I say, posing with her while her friend snaps the photo. To my surprise, two other girls join in as well. This is kind of awesome.
Hana had left me when the girl asked for a photo, probably because of her extreme embarrassment of being caught in pictures while pregnant, so I have to walk down to the front row by myself. Hana and Ash and her dad are in the the first few seats and I have to do this fancy balancing act to shuffle through the aisle without dropping my food on them. Next is an empty seat with my purse in it.
A tiny toddler hand grabs my purse and pulls it into his lap. His blonde hair falls into his eyes. “Sit down Mommy,” he says. His attention is entirely focused on my nachos. I take a seat and smile when his chubby finger dunks into the cheese sauce.
“Hold on buddy,” Jace says, pulling him to the other side of his lap. “We gotta clean those hands before you start eating. You’ve been touching everything.”
Jace holds our son in one hand and digs through my purse for the antibacterial wipes with his other hand. “Thanks for getting the food, babe,” he says, leaning over and kissing me on the cheek. I stuff a chip in my mouth. “No problem,” I say with my mouth full of food, just as the lights go dim and the roar of a dozen dirt bikes echoes in the background.
I love my husband and our beautiful son. I love my entire life. I’ve made a ton of mistakes in my life and I cringe every time I remember how stupid I was to date Ian. But sometimes really great things come out of really stupid decisions. And yeah, I might regret dating Ian, but I’ll never regret all the great things that came from that time I spent a whole summer unplugged.

Reader Interview - Kristina

My awesome friend and author Jessica L. Brooks recently inspired me to do a reader interview. It's a new way to connect with readers and find out more about why reading is so freaking amazing. I'd like to feature a new reader every month, and today's reader is my friend Kristina.

Name: Kristina Staton.

How long have you liked reading books for fun? Since like 11th or 12th grade probably.

Is there a specific book that got you into reading? If so, what was it? What made the book special? There are lot of some are "The Game Changer" by L.M. Trio, "The Perfect Game" by J. Sterling, and "Chasing McCree" by J.C. Isabella. Than later of course The whole Summer Unplugged series. All of these made me feel like I knew the characters so well and that I could relate to them.

Do you prefer ebooks or real books? Why? I like both but I can take ebooks with me. But I love the feel and seeing the words on the real books.

Name a book that recently made you laugh. Ummm all of them...there's The Rosemary Series by Abbi Glines.

If you had to choose a book boyfriend (or two) who would they be? Ummm Jace from the Summer Unplugged, Grayson from Beneath your beautiful and last Rush Finlay from the TOO FAR series.

If you were stranded on an island and could only have three books with you, which would they be? Well I can't choose just three books but I guess the Summer Unplugged Series (since all books are in one), Beneath Your Beautiful, and either one of the Rosemary Books or This Beautiful Thing.

How do you choose which books to read next? I see if I like it from the summary if it's new or one of my old ones is by how much I liked it and when I read it last.

What do you think makes a book good and what makes it bad? Good-How much I can relate to it & how much I am into it. If I can't put it down or don't want to stop reading it or if I reread it. Bad- The opposite of everything I just said. :)

Cover Reveal for The Best Kind of Thief - Part 1

Being rich isn’t fun when your dad is a womanizer whose newest girlfriend just stood you up in front of the entire high school. Seventeen-year-old Devin Asher has had enough. Armed with a full bank account and summer vacation ahead of her, she takes a random road trip to have an adventure that will beat living in a house with a new step-mom each month.

New cover release for Deadbeat

NEW COVER!

I'm excited to unveil the never cover for my book Deadbeat! The old cover was boring, don't ya think?
Deadbeat is a story about teen pregnancy...told from the guy's point of view. Here's the blurb:

When seventeen-year-old Jeremy’s girlfriend agrees to do the deed, life can't possibly get better. And then the condom breaks.

He loves Elisa as much as a popular teenage athlete can love a girl, but he doesn't want to be a dad. Her parents want a marriage - his parents want an abortion, and Elisa and Jeremy's once-perfect relationship has been reduced to fights and drama.

With a college scholarship on the line and the whole high school mocking him, Jeremy makes a decision that may haunt him forever.

Deadbeat is only $0.99 on all retailers. You can find a copy here: Amazon | Smashwords | Kobo

Or click on this to go to Deadbeat's Goodreads page
